Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
